Would definitely recommend this one, especially if you liked Amityville Horror since this is pretty much a 400 page homage to it (that original movie used to scare the shit out of me as a kid. There was also a plot point I'm glad they didn't go with related to Mags and her neighbor, glad Sager showed some restraint with that. I don't think everything holds up by the end (which turns into a clown fiesta of reveals that started to lose me) but I was really engaged through the whole thing and the book does a good job of having some actually scary moments even though I wouldn't call it horror. You get segments of his book intercut with adult Mags returning to the house (which her deceased dad kept without telling her) to try and prove to herself the book was false. No spoilers but its about a woman named Mags whose father wrote a Billy and the Cloneasaurus-esque book about him and his family having to abandon their new home after a series of incidents caused by ghosts. and 4mins.This has definitely been the best book I read so far this year, and I like it a lot better than the other Sager book Ive read (Final Girls).

As Maggie experiences strange occurrences straight out of her father’s book, she starts to believe that what he wrote was more fact than fiction. Even more unnerving is Baneberry Hall itself – a place filled with relics from another era that hint at a history of dark deeds. In Home Before Dark, Sager plays to his strengths of reconfiguring one of our canon works in the horror genre, The Amityville Horror. And locals aren’t thrilled that their small town has been made infamous thanks to Maggie’s father. People from the past, chronicled in ‘House of Horrors’, lurk in the shadows. When Maggie inherits Baneberry Hall after her father’s death, she returns to renovate the place to prepare it for sale. But she also doesn’t believe a word of it. Today, Maggie is a restorer of old homes and too young to remember any of the events mentioned in her father’s book. His tale of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling ‘The Amityville Horror’ in popularity – and skepticism. They spent three weeks there before fleeing in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called ‘House of Horrors’. Twenty-five years ago, she and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Is the place really haunted by evil forces, as her father claimed? Or are there more earthbound – and dangerous – secrets hidden within its walls? WHAT WAS IT LIKE? LIVING IN THAT HOUSE. In ‘HOME BEFORE DARK’, the latest thriller from ‘New York Times’ bestseller Riley Sager, a woman returns to the house made famous by her father’s bestselling horror memoir.
